Whether German child benefit (Kindergeld) rises in 2027 is still undecided as of 28 October 2026. Only the current amount is certain: 259 euros per child per month under section 66 of the Income Tax Act. On 28 September 2026 the Federal Government introduced a draft Income Tax Reform Act 2027 in the Bundestag (printed paper 21/8235). It proposes 267 euros from 1 January 2027, 8 euros more, and 272 euros from 1 January 2028. The Bundestag held the first reading on 8 October 2026; the finance committee follows, then the second and third readings and the Bundesrat. The new amount only applies once the act is promulgated in the Federal Law Gazette. The payment dates are already fixed regardless: the first Kindergeld of 2027 arrives between 8 January 2027 and 26 January 2027, depending on the last digit. This site does not calculate amounts.

Common questions

Will Kindergeld rise to 267 euros in 2027?

That is what the government bill proposes, but it has not been passed. Until the act has cleared the Bundestag and Bundesrat and been promulgated, 259 euros applies under section 66 EStG. We only adopt the new amount once it is in the statute.

Does the increase move the January date?

No. January's money arrives between 8 January 2027 for last digit 0 and 26 January 2027 for digit 9. The Familienkasse has already published the dates; they do not depend on whether or when an increase is passed. If an increase is passed late, the difference can be paid afterwards.

Do I need to apply for an increase?

No. The Familienkasse applies a statutory change to the Kindergeld amount on its own; no new application is needed. Do check that your bank details and address are up to date with the Familienkasse so that the payment arrives on time.
